Not sure if you have the correct lead magnets? Find out for $50.
The $50 Lead Magnet Test is a free checklist and scorecard from Brad Hart (Make More Marbles, Optimus) for finding out whether a lead magnet works before you build anything more. Three magnets, $10 a day each, five days on Meta. Under $5 a lead is a keeper, $5 to $10 is trending (fix the top of the page and run it again), over $10 you kill it and try the next one.
Brad put out 22 lead magnets before 5 of them worked. The two simplest ones, an 80-term glossary and a seven-prompt sheet, pulled about a thousand leads each at $2–3 a lead. Those are the numbers those magnets got; the test tells you what yours get.
What's inside
- Stop polishing the bait — "That's like saying, 'I'm going to work on my fishing bait for three weeks before I go fishing.'"
- Pick three magnets — the simplest versions you can stand. "It's just so simple that you'd be like, 'Oh my God, this is boring.' That's what converts."
- $10 a day each, five days, Meta first — the fastest, cheapest read on whether the hook works.
- Read the scorecard — over $10 a lead, kill it; $5–$10, fix above the fold; under $5, keeper.
- Talk to the first ten leads before you raise the spend.
- Repeat — one in seven works; don't take the six personally.
- Do this now — the five-day scorecard, filled in, plus a copy-paste prompt that drafts three simple magnets from your own call transcripts.
Frequently asked questions
Aren't the numbers too small to mean anything?
Five days at $10 a day is enough to know kill or keep. It is not enough to scale on, and it isn't meant to be. Prove it small before you go big; the scorecard tells you which magnet earned a bigger budget.
Shouldn't I email and text the leads too?
Retarget first, the list second, text last. A trickle before a flood. The test is about whether the magnet earns a lead at all; the follow-up comes after you have talked to the first ten.
We tried an ad once and it flopped. Doesn't that settle it?
If it got clicks and no leads, the hook worked and the page didn't. That is an above-the-fold problem, not a magnet problem. Fix the headline, the subhead and the button, then run the same $50 again.
What does the test cost, and what do I get when I sign up?
The checklist and scorecard are free. The ad spend is yours: $10 a day per magnet for five days, so $50 per magnet and $150 for three. One email signs you in with no password, and the test sits next to 100+ other free resources at optimus.university.
